To the east of Plettenberg Bay lies the Tsitsikamma National Park. A dense luxuriant indigenous forest, with rugged ravines,Β streamsΒ and waterfalls, as well as delightful sandy coves. Tsitsikamma is a Khoi word meaning βplace of abundant or sparkling waterβ.Β The region, which sits on a 200m high plateau stretches from the Bloukrans River in the west to the Tsitsikamma River in the east. It is bordered by the imposing Tsitsikamma Mountains and by the Indian Ocean. This undoubtedly superb area of primevalΒ rain-forestΒ and wild coastline is incredibly beautiful,Β making it a definite stop on your Garden Route trip.Β Β
Β For ease of travel, we have divided the area into two:Β
Β Each area offers something unique. The Crags boasts amazing wine farms and luxurious estates, whereas Tstisikammaβs rugged landscape carves out stunning wild trails and viewpoints.Β
The Tsitsikamma coastal parkΒ stretchesΒ for 75km along the southern Cape coast. ItΒ comprisesΒ a wild,Β unspoiltΒ and rugged stretch of dense indigenous forest.Β Numerous trails and walks weave through the dense forest.Β One of the most beloved walksΒ is the pretty boardwalk to the suspension bridge over the Storms River.Β TheΒ iconic bridge overlooks the gorgeΒ and isΒ a mustΒ for those who love nature and some adventure.Β This is a perfect introduction to the parkΒ Nearby is Storms River village, the centre for a variety of adventure activities.Β
We could have included this area withΒ Plettenberg, becauseΒ it is only 20km away. But it is a great area to base yourselves, as you can easily reach Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and the Tsitsikamma from hereΒ (without the hustle and bustle).Β The small region has becomeΒ knownΒ for its various wildlife sanctuaries and outdoor experiences.Β This is home to Monkeyland, the Birds of Eden, Tenikwa Wildlife Centre and Bramon Wine Estate amongst others.Β
